PhD-Project
Biopolitics and biotechnologies. Heteronormativity, reproduction and citizenship in German debates on assisted reproduction
(Working title)

This dissertation aims at understanding the complex relationship between heteronormativity, gender and citizenship in the field of reproductive technology and its legal regulation in Germany.  The research area encompasses current debates about the legitimacy of forms of non-normative parenting and assisted reproduction as well as related debates on social eugenics, immigration, race and class. In the context of rapid biomedical development and transnationalization of reproductive economies, how are the normative boundaries drawn with respect to the question who is entitled to reproduce society and who is not? Discourse-analytical methods will be used to examine how heteronormative gender and citizenship interact and are reformulated amidst the tension between biomedical possibilities and biopolitical regulations.
